Coupons #7 and #8 Safeway & McD's

Coupon# 7 - Save $5 off $50 at Safeway.  Bonus:  for spending over $35, you get a 5-cent/litre discount at their gas station.  Last year's discount was only 3 cents/litre....all I can say is every little bit helps!

Coupon# 8 - Seems like Big Mac prices have climbed too!  The "free" Big Mac I got with the BOGO coupon rang in at $4.19.  That's 30 cents more than when I last used this coupon (see coupon #1).

Savings:  9.19
Cumulative: $37.83

Drum roll, please....Ta-da!  I have now officially "saved" just a bit more than what it cost me to purchase the two Entertainment books...and we're not even at the end of the first quarter of the year.  However, I'd say it was mostly due to buying groceries at Safeway and using the bonus Domino's coupons...and not so much the actual Entertainment book offerings; at least, not yet.

Stay tuned for more savings!

p.s.  Entertainment books are on sale right now, I believe.  Something like $17 per book for a limited time.

Coupons 4, 5 & 6

Ok, it's been a bit hectic. Time to catch up:

Coupons 4 & 5:  Used a second $5. off Domino's pizza for a large Brooklyn pepperoni pizza (my fave!) plus the coupon for free cinnastix - dessert!  No delivery charge because we picked it up at the store. Even the person serving us said "wow, what a deal!"

Recap:  10.99 Large Brooklyn Pizza + 4.75 Eight Cinnastix
Saved $5.00 plus 4.75 = total $9.75 savings
We paid 5.99 plus taxes ... cheap meal for two!

Coupon 6:  5.00 off $50 at Safeway.
Used it on Customer Appreciation Day, where I saved 10% before getting the $5 off.

So, total Entertainment book savings for coupons 4, 5 and 6:  14.75.
Cumulative savings: $28.64

Coupon #3 - Bonus Save $5 Domino's Pizza card

Well, we went for a hike up the mountain yesterday morning. Man, am I out of shape!  My friend Judy, her husband, and her 16-year-old cousin invited me and the bf to join them and their two gorgeous dogs for the walk.  Barely fifteen minutes in, I was starting to sound like Darth Vader.  Seriously...huffing and puffing...and I could feel myself getting red in the face.  The only things that kept me going were the promise of freshly baked banana bread, and knowing that once we got to the top, it would be much easier coming downhill on the way back.

It was a beautiful day, and I have to admit that I was cherishing the fact that all my friends back east were dealing with SNOW, while I was enjoying the spring-like conditions. The view from the top was amazing, although technically we were only halfway up the mountain.  I was definitely glad I had my new hiking boots on though, as it was quite steep in some areas. We had such a great time talking about so many different things that I could hardly believe we'd been hiking for nearly two hours!

Bf insisted on leaving as soon as we got to the parking lot (apparently he needed to use the 'loo') so I missed out on the banana bread. :(   To make up for it, he would treat me to pizza.  I had the bonus $5 card for Domino's from the book with me, so I asked him to use it!

Card savings:  $5.00
Cumulative savings: $13.89

Safeway Shopping Trip

Well, no new entertainment coupons used so far this week, but I did score big at Safeway yesterday.

Safeway has a "Customer Appreciation Day" the first Tuesday of every month, where they offer you a choice of 10% discount or 10x Air Miles. I try to hold off buying staples until this day -- it's like having your own sale on stuff that normally wouldn't go on sale, and if you're buying something that is already on sale, then you get an even better deal!

Score of the day:  Advertised special was 3 Stayfree/Carefree products for $9.99 with a bonus of 25 Air Miles.  I had just enough $2.00 off Stayfree coupons, so:  $9.99 - $6.00 (3x$2)  = $3.99. That's like buying one on sale and getting two free plus the Air Miles bonus!

Part 2:  Now, I normally buy Honey Nut Cheerios, but I had a $1 off coupon for Oatmeal Crisp, plus it was on sale: reg. $4.99, sale $3.99 - $1.00 coupon = $2.99 which is a decent price for a 505 g box. The bonus is that General Mills has free Cineplex offers on selected cereals, and this one happens to be one of them :) ... which is why I thought it would be a good time to try this new (for me) cereal.  Free General Admission at Cineplex is about $10...so I've actually gained an additional value of $7.01!

Summary from my receipt:
club card savings.....$94.79 (including the 17.32 10% discount at the till)
coupon savings........$  9.50
Total savings value 41% .... $104.30
Paid amount ........$151.81
for 256.11 worth of groceries = not bad!

p.s. I took the 10% discount AND I earned 107 Air Miles, taking advantage of the promos for Purex bath tissues, Old Dutch snacks, J&J Stayfree, Primo pasta and the base 7 Air Miles.
(That's why you always take the discount...I saved $17.32 and still got over 100 Air Miles!)

:)

p.p.s.  I was only able to shop like this because I left the BF at home!  ;)

Coupon #2 - Safeway $5 off $50 purchase

Went to Safeway with dear BF to pick up a few things on Thursday as the cupboards were nearly bare and he needed to pack a lunch for work the next day.

Knowing we'd be back on Tuesday to really stock up, since the first Tuesday of every month is Safeway's "Customer Appreciation Day" where you can save 10% (or get 10x the Air Miles), I told him we were only going to spend $50 in order to use the coupon (and still get the equivalent of 10% off).

We parted ways at the deli counter, and met up at the produce section.  I realized that the week's specials were ending (Safeway now has their flyer specials starting on Fridays) and asked him to pick up a few of the  Campbell's Chunky soup (on sale 3 for $5, limit of 6). Bad mistake. He grabbed nine (9!) so of course three were rung in at the regular price (expensive). Arrghh!  by this time there was a really long lineup behind us, so I said nothing and let it go.  The bill came to over $100 (so much for 10% off!) and the only positive thing I could think of was that luckily we weren't being charged five cents per bag. Otherwise it would have been adding insult to injury.

Sidebar:  There is a 5-cent plastic bag levy everywhere, with two exceptions:  Safeway does not charge anything, while Thrifty Foods will give you a 3-cent discount for every bag you bring with you.

E-book savings this trip:  $5.00
Cumulative savings:  $8.89

Score of the day:  I had a $7.00 off Airwick i-motion starter kit, and Safeway had it on sale for $7.99, which means I bought a cool new toy (I mean necessity for the bathroom) for 99 cents!

p.s.  Make sure you take the 10% discount on Customer Appreciation Day at Safeway on Tuesday. (The 10x Air Miles is not worth nearly as much as the discount.)

More Bang for less than a Buck

It's taking longer than expected to get organized! :(   I'm making up my grocery list in anticipation of using the "$5 off $50 purchase at Safeway" coupon from the book.  That's 10% off groceries...not bad. Hopefully I will make it there today or tomorrow.

In the meantime, I thought I'd share my frugal score with everyone:

I was at the Real Superstore yesterday and guess what?  They are price-matching the Safeway deal for Crest toothpaste at 80 cents each. I happened to have a $1 off coupon for Crest, so of course I bought two tubes (didn't want to "waste" the 20-cent difference):

.80 + .80 = $1.60 - $1.00 coupon = .60 for 2 tubes of Crest toothpaste 130 mL whitening + Scope

That's like 30 cents each!  That's as close to free as you can get!

p.s.  I just received a batch of P&G coupons in the mail today, and there's 50 cent off Crest coupon in there.  That's another 30-cent tube of Crest toothpaste! Score!!!

Note:  Run, don't walk, and grab yourself some Crest toothpaste.  It's still a deal at 80 cents.  Also, both the 75  mL and 130 mL tubes are on sale for the same price, so make sure you pick up the 130 mL size to get more bang for your buck.

New Year's Resolutions down the drain

Happy New Year!

New Year's Resolutions:
1. Get more sleep (go to bed earlier).
2. Exercise.
3. Try to eat more healthy foods and less junk food.
4. Stop procrastinating.
5. Start a blog and maintain for at least six months.

Well, it's halfway through January and I can safely say that #1 - 4 are pretty much toast at this point.  I'll confess that I drove to McD's late last night and had a Big Mac, fries and a soda.  Need I say more?

...which brings us to #5. What should I blog about? Well, I ordered two Entertainment coupon books and they arrived yesterday. I thought it might be interesting to track how much value I could get out of them, i.e., how much I could "save" by using these coupons during the course of the year, or at least for the next 9 1/2 months! (The coupons expire Nov. 1, 2011.)

Day 1:  Used coupon E90. McDonald's BOGO Big Mac. Spent $6.93 (6.19 + .74 tx).  Saved $3.89.

Off to a good start...
